Liz Cheney (1966-?)
Liz Cheney has not died. She is 54 years old and is still serving as the sole congressional representative for the state of Wyoming. But when she does die what will her obituary say? What will be her lasting legacy? Will it be the mildly courageous act of going against President Trump after he has left office, and after she voted for him in two elections and voted in line with his policies over 90% of the time? Or will her legacy be that of her fathers, a lying, warmonger, who made the world worse?
Liz Cheney’s entire adult-life has been one of nepotism. Her political career began with her father setting her up with a variety of jobs in the US state department, most notably as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, and as Coordinator for Broader Middle East and North Africa Initiatives. The former job was all but created specifically for her, and mostly was just her being paid taxpayer dollars to be a cheerleader for her fathers regime change wars for oil and weapons manufacturers.
Following the end of the Bush regime, Cheney went to work on Fred Thompson’s brief presidential run and founded the non-profit “Keep America Safe” which did little besides harass lawyers that defended suspected terrorists. I would love to go into more detail about what other horrible shit “Keep America Safe” did but they were scrubbed from the internet a little under a decade ago.
Had Liz stopped here her legacy would be awful enough but unfortunately this was just the beginning for her. In 2013 she decided to run for US senate, luckily she received basically no support and dropped out. In a just world this would have been it for her, but it is not a just world. Instead Cheney campaigned for and won the only seat Wyoming has in the House of Representatives. She took office on January 3, 2017.
As a representative Cheney has just been abysmal, it would be difficult to find a congressperson with a worse voting record than her.
She has been especially cruel on immigration, she voted for the restrictive “H.R. 4760 Securing America’s Future Act of 2018” voted to express “Support for ICE” in the wake of the child separation policy. A year later she voted against the “Humanitarian Standards for Individuals in Customs and Border Protection Custody Act” which sought to set minimum standards for how to treat those in the custody of ICE.
Outside of her actual votes, even at doing her job she has grossly underperformed, compared to other House Sophomores of her class, she had co-sponsored the 2nd fewest number of bills, was the “2nd most absent” House party leader of 2019. Also among House Party Leaders her bills received the 3rd fewest bi-partisan cosponsors.
Was Liz Cheney right to oppose Trump after January 6th? Yes absolutely, but in the wake of her career does that really matter. Regardless of what pundits say now, Cheney’s legacy is one of nepotism, corruption, and profiteering off war and corporate greed. Please do not treat her with respect for she does not deserve it.
